1 Summary This passage was extracted from “in the name of the father” (1990), the novel deals with the story of a man unjustly accused. The novel is the story of Gerry Conlon,who was framed by the police. It is based on a true story, called the Guildford 4, a group of young people convicted for the bombing of the Guildford pub in London in 1974. They were were convicted on charges of murder (= they were charged with murder and conspiracy) on the basis of their false confessions.The passage was written from Gerry's point of view. It is a true-life story which deals with false witnesses,false evidence, forced confession and a miscarriage of justice. He was falsely implicated in bomb attack which left 5 people dead in Guildford. Gerry Conlon the main character and his friends moved into a squat with a group of hippies.On the night of the Guildford bombing, Paul Hill and Gerry are in a park. They are arrested under the prevention of terrorism act which allows the police to hold a suspect without charge for 7 day. To make matters worse, they are reported as suspicious by on of the hippies. The police was under pressure to bring the culprits to justice. Gerry and his relatives were jailed, tried and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment The passage can be divided into 3 parts : the first part takes place at the police in London, it deals with the police questioning, the third part points up the abuse Gerry was subjected to.

2 Context The I.R.A is a militant terrorist organization, its purpose is to make British rule ineffective by the use of armed forces, to bring the situation to a crisis = to destabilize, to put pressure on the gvt (Sinn Fein was the political wing of the IRA). Targets (innocent victims or British policemen) Bloody Sunday : in the 70s, there were riots between the British troops and the IRA. During anti-protest demonstrations in 1972, 14 unarmed people were killed. The deaths of those innocent victims became the symbol of British oppression.

The conflict in Northern Ireland in the 70s (Catholics / Protestants) Northern Ireland is also known as Ulster. Englsh colonisation goes back to the 12th century with the invasion of Ireland by the English (Henry II). In 1541, henry VIII made himself king of Ireland, the Irish Parliament was made subordinate to the English crown (16th c) (17th c) Under James I (1603), the lands were confiscated and given to English settlers (19th c) 1801. Great Britain and Ireland became the United Kingdom. The Act of Union abolished the Irish Parliament and made Ireland part of Great Britain 1919 : there was a war between the Irish and the English 1921 : the outcome of the civil war between Protestants and Catholics was the partition of the island between the Irish free state the South which got its independence in 1949) and a large protestant community who did not want to be governed by the South.. The partition was never recognized by the IRA. Since the 1960s, Northern Ireland has been the stage of a cycle of violence between a Protestant majority who wanted to remain part of the U.K and the Catholic minority who wanted to unite with the Republic.

Gerry Conlon's case and the Guilford bombing (1974) In the summer of 1974, the IRA decided to start a bombing campaign in England. They planted bombs in 2 pubs. Gerry and his friends were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were arrested under the terrorism as members of the active service unit. The outcome of the trial : they did not press charges against the policed officers, no police officer was ever convicted. Finally on the 19th October 1989, the Guildford Four at their second appeal were proven innocent. Gerry walked out of the front door of the Court of Appeal a free man to the rapturous applause of the waiting crowds. The outcome of the conflict (the Good Friday Agreement 1998 signed by Tony Blair (Prime Minister) After cease-fires, Northern Ireland was given the right to set up its own parliament.The economy was affected by terrorism because businessemen did not want to invest.

3 His criticism of the police The police interrogation was a parody of justice, he sat mesmerized in the room, he was brutally treated, he was frightened into confessing, they were subjected to threats, intimidation, physical violence, dirty medthods, humiliating methods, beaten up. Used as a scapegoat, pitiless, ruthlessly interrogated by the police, bogus confession The questioning was manipulated, they needed a culprit, they were under pressure, public opinion pressured them into charging an innocent victim, there was certainly pressure on the police to get some results, to bring charges They misrepresented the facts, they distorted the truth, the police had plenty of time to terrorise him into submission, he was set up / framed by the police

Throughout the book the one main thread is the fact that Gerry had hope. This was to keep him going for the 15 years he was to spend inside. A lesser person might well have given up. The book sets out in graphic detail the brutality he suffered at the hands of the prison officers and his fellow prisoners. The loneliness he suffered both in solitary and due to his ostracism by the other prisoners.But hope and the knowledge and belief that he was innocent and that the truth would out kept him going. One cannot imagine how he felt and the effects that it had on him and his family. His mother Sarah was visiting not only her innocent son, but her beloved and innocent husband as well, in prison. 5 Opinion a) Why did Gerry Conlon write his novel ? To clear his name, to expose the injustice, to make people aware of, b) What do you think of the first part of the film ? Suspenseful, gripping plot, complex, breathtaking, a good dramatic part, the storyline, not a big-budget film, kept in suspense, overdramatic, This shocking true story highlights the realities of our so-called justice system. The story brings the British legal system into disrepute. it still fills me with anger. How could this happen in a society that praises itself on its so-called human rights ? Sadly the case of the Guildford Four is not an isolated case. One can not imagine the damage that this must have done to the Four and their families.
